SKKU Engineering 60th Anniversary Time Capsule

The Time Capsule project was developed for the 60th anniversary of the College of Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University in 2026, with the aim of collecting and preserving the histories and records of eight departments within a single shared structure.

The outer form consists of eight petal-like shells arranged in a spiral configuration, interwoven to wrap around a central core. This structure reflects the idea that each department maintains its own identity while contributing to a shared foundation within the College of Engineering.

The central core adopts an industrial language inspired by gears and metal frames, expressing the technical character and engineering-based foundation of the college.

The project was developed in collaboration with the ASMR and SDML research labs in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, as well as Team Pearl. A robotic arm was used to transfer and place the capsule, while a corresponding sealing sequence was implemented in a virtual reality environment. During the sealing process, the internal lighting transitions to green, referencing the symbolic color of Sungkyunkwan University.

Through the combination of the spiral outer structure and the central core, the project represents the process of gathering and preserving the records of the eight departments as a unified time capsule, functioning as a performative object during the event.
